You & Five-O Program Increases Knowledge and Comfort Level
DURHAM, North Carolina—You & Five-O is pleased to report that the results of our pre-and post-tests administered during its 2016 presentations show that participants had an 18.06% increase in knowledge of their rights after participating in the program. The study also found that the participants' comfort level of interaction with law enforcement increased by 2.95%. (Since its inception, You & Five-O has subsequently been contracted to present on behalf of the Durham Police Department and the Town of Carrboro Police Department.)
The results collected and analyzed were for 143 Beta study cases (surveys) in 2016. We also compared 2016 data to 70 *pilot study cases we gathered in our inaugural year of 2015. This gave us a total of 213 study cases. There were differences in both studies among minority, non-minority and older participants regarding their support of the program. Non-minorities had a higher support for the program than minority participants. Older participants were more supportive of the program, which is why You & Five-O targets youth and young adults for its program.
The entire comparative data analysis—created, analyzed, and compiled by Dr. M. Michaux Parker of Indiana East University—and survey instrument are available at the link below.
“You & Five-O is very pleased with these statistics. We started this journey with the hope of changing lives and empowering the community with information about their rights. We also hoped to help improve relationships with law enforcement. I believe the data shows that we are well on our way to accomplishing these goals,” said You & Five-O Founder B.J. Council.

*Dr. Tonya Van Deinse prepared this brief report to summarize the results of the You & Five O pilot test. Dr. Van Deinse is a researcher and faculty member at UNC Chapel Hill and she works on a number of research and evaluation projects related to the criminal justice system (including some that are affiliated with DPS); however, I should note that her work on this evaluation was independent of her role at the university.
